Three Minutes’ Silence

When I was burgled, I lost some self-confidence,
When I had my pocket picked, I lost all my self-confidence,
I no longer took things naturally for granted,
I saw danger where once I saw self-expression.
So it is now with Nature and humanity,
Where we once saw beauty, we now see cruelty:
That precocious snowdrop will soon abruptly die;
And that football, spinning in the air,
Isn’t that the globe knocked off its axis,
By the tectonic power of thousands of Hiroshimas?
Nothing will be the same again.
