Go to the bookies
and put on a World Cup bet
two quid that will do.
Place is really full
matches shown live on TVs
punters drinking tea.
So I place my bet
England 2-1 Kane first goal
that’s a good […] -

Fans see themselves
as a camera zooms in,
their on the big screen
so they point and grin.
They go a bit nutty
a few seconds of fame,
spectators start to pose
not watching the game.
Many on their […] -

Didn’t know Hazel O’Connor will be at the Godiva festival. Her late mother lived just a mile from where I live. Hazel is a proud Cov Kid and loves coming back home. So I’ll be there to watch her !

Stock up the fridge

Cancel that holiday

say while in the garden
you got bit by a tick.
It’s football’s showpiece

Now let’s hope my team and Forest Green battle it out for top spot next season. If the Sky Blues top the division the vegan pies are on me ! ☺ -

To come out on top
be the best on the day,
you’ll need loads of oomph
at home and away.
To end up the winner
and stay in the lead,
you’ll need lots of oomph
to thrive and succeed.
To be called a […] -

Enough is enough
unfit owners it’s time to go,
just leave our clubs alone
as they sink further down below.
Enough is enough
inadequate owners there’s the door,
and never ever come back
as we can’t take this […] -

He’s always feeling sick
got pains in his head,
constantly on edge
nerves torn to a shred.
His hair much greyer
face ashen and pale,
he’s smoking again
drinking too much ale.
He can’t get to sleep

Bring back rattles
let’s hear that click,
the ones we used to have
made of wood and thick.
Bring back rattles

not shy away or hide.

love wielding the axe,
they’ll get rid of the gaffer
by twitter,email,or fax.

He’s a football supporter
family say he’s mad,
neighbours laugh at him
some think he’s sad.
But to his mates
who are fans too,
he’s a terrace legend

He’ll travel many miles

Great poem Mike Bartram. Eddie was a legend, affectionately known in Liverpool as, “the first hooligan.” Even the hoolies were well dressed in those days. The amazing thing was he was only 26 when that picture was taken. He’d played for Everton youth team and was well known to the players. He never got arrested. They threw him out and he climbed back in, just in time for Derek Temples winner.
I used the picture of him being tackled to the ground on the front cover of my book, “Once Upon a rhyme in Football.” It’s worth looking on youtube and finding the re-enactment of the Wembley scene. Frank Skinner and Baddiel went around to Eddies home in the 1990’s and acted it out on the green outside. It’s hilarious, especially all the effort they put in to get Eddie sober enough to shoot the scene.

Re Man City:
OK it was 20 years ago but Criag Wilson did write this and a few others on them back in 04/05.
BTW I’m more Forest Green Rover since 2014 (and Chelsea) these days . I drum and am a standing season ticket holder .

Hi Denys,
Yes Richard Williams you’re a brilliant wordsmith, my friend. When I first saw your football poetry I thought it was the superb Guardian sports and music writer. I once had the honour of sitting next to Richard Williams while at the Independent on the sports desk. He writes about music and sport with immense knowledge and authority. I’ve read a couple of Richard’s books recently. Great writer rather like you Richard Williams the Pompey fan. Congratulations on promotion.
