All the talk’s of Europe
A great night for the Paddies
But my magic moment tonight
Was watching our young laddies.
The glory of the FA Youth Cup
A competition where you can dream
Of seeing our boys at the Emirates […] -

I claim to be a Luddite
New technology I’m loathe to try
But I’m not quite that old dinosaur
Where everything has passed me by.
I’ve got a mobile phone
Not one of them fancy computer things
But I’m ‘modern’ enough […] -

A Monday at work’s just over
The whole week stretches ahead
Normal people go home for supper
Then thinking of their bed.
Perhaps a bit of telly
Corrie or Eastenders on the box
None of that will be for me
Out for […] -

It’s a gorgeous Saturday morning
I’m off down to the coast
FA Cup at Whitehawk
You know the thing I hate most…
No hope or expectation
I’m sure we’re going to lose
At least unlike distant past defeats
I won’t […] -

I’m proud to be an “Old Skool Dinosaur”
Does joking about “New-veau’s ” cause a split?
I can’t believe anyone would think that
No matter where you stand or sit.
But I’ve got to confess I hate them
Which you might […] -

It’s a lovely Bank Holiday Monday
And it’s Hamburg Cup Final day
But which side will I be supporting
Do you really want me to say?
Truth is I don’t like either side
Last years semi still hurts from afar
Cheating […] -

It’s well known we don’t trust politicians
Always lying about their facts
But if you’re from the terraces
This one stopped you in your tracks.
For this was a ‘schoolboy error’
That no fan should ever […] -

So you’ve been on the telly
Excusing your drinking binge
From one alcoholic to another
I hope this doesn’t sound like a whinge.
But it’s not ok to relapse
To binge drink & say everything’s fine
Just because it’s […] -

Today is Easter Monday
I’m sitting on a bus
There’s a girl on the next seat singing
I don’t want to make a fuss.
I wonder what she’d think of me
If I sang Dulwich Hamlet songs out loud
Rather than her […] -

It’s like going to a circus
Doing the same thing every week
You’re wonderfully ‘new-veau’
Sorry I can’t turn the other cheek.
I’m not saying we should boo
Or jump on the players’ back
But all our loyal chants must […] -

I’m going to be late
For the FA Vase
Bus stuck in Forest Hill
Behind a procession of cars.
Mildly annoying
Rather than doing my nut
But it’s only Fisher
So I just sit here and tut.
Truth is I don’t mind
The […] -

Poor old BILL STICKERS
Always getting the blame
About to be prosecuted
Even if it’s not him.
Jesus Christ!
It’s not Bill
Who’s been plastering Lewisham
With their message:Jesus Saves
Sinners
Repent and […] -

“Dear Lord”
I’m terribly sorry for your loss
Is there a worse time to die…
On Good Friday of all days!
Well apart from Christmas
You expect everyone to be happy then.
I’m gutted for you really.
It’s put me right […] -

It’s been such a long time since I’ve done this
Had forgotten it was so much fun
Feeling that warmth from within
Standing under the cold Spring sun.
Watching Dulwich Hamlet Juniors
Boys who are only eleven

There’s a day for something
A day for this & that
Even a day for folk like me
Who want to be a poetic prat!
But it’s amazing that I’ve learnt to enjoy
Trying to be a working class bard
I see it as […] -

I’m in a pub full of Dulwich fans
And I’m really bored to tears
We’re here to watch the football
And knock back a few beers.
Well all apart from me
Got to stick to the soft drink
I don’t need alcohol for my […] -

I am the King of the road
Majestic in my boredom
Sat high above
Not your stream of poppies
Celebrated at the Tower
But red specks
As far as the eye can see.
Crawling along
Ahead of me
On the road down to […] -

I turn the page
And there it says
Right at the top on bold:
“The Den”
I get all excited
Brain goes into football mode.
“Come on you Lions!”
But I quickly realise
It’s just some rubbish
About Foxes.
And I don’t […] -

I’m at a Czech non-league game
It cost just over a pound
Despite the fact it’s so cheap
There’s dozens outside the ground.

Back at the old Millwall ‘Den’
Apologies for being […] -

I’ve arrived at the football
For my birthday treat
It might only be Czech Third Division
But a Friday night game you can’t beat.
Running far too early
So nip into the bar
Talk about a timewarp
A nicotine fug of […] - Load More

Great poem Mike Bartram. Eddie was a legend, affectionately known in Liverpool as, “the first hooligan.” Even the hoolies were well dressed in those days. The amazing thing was he was only 26 when that picture was taken. He’d played for Everton youth team and was well known to the players. He never got arrested. They threw him out and he climbed back in, just in time for Derek Temples winner.
I used the picture of him being tackled to the ground on the front cover of my book, “Once Upon a rhyme in Football.” It’s worth looking on youtube and finding the re-enactment of the Wembley scene. Frank Skinner and Baddiel went around to Eddies home in the 1990’s and acted it out on the green outside. It’s hilarious, especially all the effort they put in to get Eddie sober enough to shoot the scene.

Re Man City:
OK it was 20 years ago but Criag Wilson did write this and a few others on them back in 04/05.
BTW I’m more Forest Green Rover since 2014 (and Chelsea) these days . I drum and am a standing season ticket holder .

Hi Denys,
Yes Richard Williams you’re a brilliant wordsmith, my friend. When I first saw your football poetry I thought it was the superb Guardian sports and music writer. I once had the honour of sitting next to Richard Williams while at the Independent on the sports desk. He writes about music and sport with immense knowledge and authority. I’ve read a couple of Richard’s books recently. Great writer rather like you Richard Williams the Pompey fan. Congratulations on promotion.
