I’m old school I am
Don’t think I don’t give a damn
But this could be the day we meet our match
If we win it would be such a catch.
With low expectations the hurt is less
Is that what I’m trying to address?
‘No […] -

People talk about god-forsaken holes
Grounds we suffer to witness a few goals.
Why am I in Mile End
On a Wednesday night?
A Gordon Brasted Trophy game
I can’t be that bright.
Method to my madness
That’s for […] -

Bart Simpson
Was the boy
Who sold his soul
But that wasn’t real
Just a cartoon goal.
Last night I saw
A Judas team in red.
If family of mine wore that kit
I’d class them as dead.
Plenty of teams
That I don’t […] -

Not feeling well, a stinking cold
Yet on football I’m still sold
Not Man. United
On Sky Sports Four
Even if I liked Murdoch
I’m far too poor.
Only way to watch is live in the flesh
A genuine grassroots amateur […] -

Can anyone explain
The fixation
With a home draw?
Nothing more than a bore.
First thing out of my mouth
Avoid all those from the Conference South
If we Le Bromlei over in France
Won’t be in with much of a […] -

Defeat is simply inconceivable
Totally unbelievable
The Musselmen from Shoreham
Should be no threat
Yet…
Lymington and New Milton
Southwick
Littlehampton Town
Tunbridge Wells
Need I go on?
No wonder there’s […] -

Today is the day
When you can really dream
Battling through to play the cream
When you recall the teams
Who’ve made it the past
Will it finally
Be our time at last?
Canvey, Hastings even Chasetown who?
How much […] -

That’s what happens
When you dare to dream
Signing players the cream of the crop
No longer hoping just to stay up
But dreaming of being top!
You weren’t just flair
But also “Phwoar!”
A sexy player
Who could also […] -

I’d really love you
To prove me wrong
But I don’t think
You were worth your song
Truth be told
Your pedigree’s not bad
But on current form
We’ve been had!
Some hustle and bustle
But little flair and skill
Really […] -

I travelled across London
For a match tonight
You could say it was a fanciful flight
British Airways versus Indian Gymkhana
Hardly classified as footballing nirvana
Not going to be a filler
On your ‘Match of the […] -

Who would have thought football’s alive
Ultra-buzzing down at Step Five?
There’s been a revolution
At the Old Spotted Dog
Not doing things by half
More going the the whole hog.
From the cliched one man
And his […] -

You might not think I’m serious
Just having a laugh
But I’m in mourning
For an inflatable giraffe.
He came into my life
All too fleeting
Can’t even recall
Our first meeting.
But Ged was for real
One of the Pink […] -

I hardly knew there was a game
Sandwiched on my Underground train
Chelsea & Villa was the clash
Where were the fans on the lash?
Lairy, singing, loud and brash?
Football tourists in the latest shirt
No looking […] -

Two on the spin
Six points from six.
It’s a bit of a cliche corner
But…I am as happy as Larry.
On second thoughts
Maybe not.
What if…

Lowestoft Town or Hendon.
He won’t be such a happy chappy […] -

As old Bruce Forsythe would say
“Good game, good game”
Of which I have no complaints
But which one?
East End muttoned glamour
Or home where the heart is?
I chose the much more low key

Truth be told
I couldn’t care less
About the game.
Though it would have been nice
To have won.

I don’t even want to imagine
The pity you […] -

Do you remember
The good old days
When pre-season football
Was simply eleven-a-side?
Taken seriously
And played for pride.
No modern multiple substitutions
Changing teams in each half.
Call this football?

A real eye-opener
Into how the game was
And how it is now-
A tippy tappy, contact free
Holy cash cow.
Retired old pro
Forgotten in name
A half decent footballer
That was his game.

So what is the difference
Between normality and insanity?
Well here I am sat
At the centre of the universe
That’s Trafalgar Square
To you and me
Well maybe to to you
Which makes me the crazy one.

Great poem Mike Bartram. Eddie was a legend, affectionately known in Liverpool as, “the first hooligan.” Even the hoolies were well dressed in those days. The amazing thing was he was only 26 when that picture was taken. He’d played for Everton youth team and was well known to the players. He never got arrested. They threw him out and he climbed back in, just in time for Derek Temples winner.
I used the picture of him being tackled to the ground on the front cover of my book, “Once Upon a rhyme in Football.” It’s worth looking on youtube and finding the re-enactment of the Wembley scene. Frank Skinner and Baddiel went around to Eddies home in the 1990’s and acted it out on the green outside. It’s hilarious, especially all the effort they put in to get Eddie sober enough to shoot the scene.

Hi Denys…
Re Man City:
OK it was 20 years ago but Criag Wilson did write this and a few others on them back in 04/05.
BTW I’m more Forest Green Rover since 2014 (and Chelsea) these days . I drum and am a standing season ticket holder .

Hi Denys,
Yes Richard Williams you’re a brilliant wordsmith, my friend. When I first saw your football poetry I thought it was the superb Guardian sports and music writer. I once had the honour of sitting next to Richard Williams while at the Independent on the sports desk. He writes about music and sport with immense knowledge and authority. I’ve read a couple of Richard’s books recently. Great writer rather like you Richard Williams the Pompey fan. Congratulations on promotion.
