They got on their bikes
Did Shearer and Chiles
Left St James’s Park
Rode Three Hundred miles.
A tremendous acheivement
And please may I ask
If Mister Shearer could on the way back
Despite aching limbs
And a sore […] -

Tying white coloured laces
Brylcreem on hair
And strong manly faces.
Stuffing fat shin pads
Down thick woollen socks
The crowds make the journey
From coal mines and docks.

The game of football and me
Go together like a large gin and T
Like Richards and Jagger
A Cloak and a dagger
Blair and Bush
Dalgliesh and Rush
And like Taylor and Burton
One thing is for certain
My love for the […] -

I remember a game in 96′
When we all went home delighted
We had just scored Five at St James’ Park
The opposition ? Manchester United.
So the club produced a video
And called it ‘Howay the lads Five -0 ‘

My suitcase is packed
And I have set the alarm clock
We could soon be playing Sunderland
In far off Bankok.

It broaden’s the mind
Away with the lads
Leaving the missus […] -

We run our fast food van
On the same spot for Forty Years
Me and ‘Wor Lass’ Fran
We have seen so many players,
Managers come and go
And for the last Eleven seasons

It all comes down to the luck of the draw
And I dont believe in self pity
But it looks like a long trek to the Arsenal
Providing we get past Stoke City.
And no doubt another ridiculous kick off time
Just like the […] -

It snowed heavy on that Christmas eve
Back in 1952
The dawn brought Christmas morning
And with it dreams came true.
Fot there on the chair
Beside my bed
A laced up football
Crimson red
A pair of boots
With laces […] -

Mid table in the premiership
Is not such a crime
So why all the panic
Give the big man some time.
And as pencils are sharpened
By the tabloid hacks
Who without justifcation
Launch scathing attacks.

I had hardly slept a wink
I’d been to the Netty* a dozen times

When John Barnes signed for ‘THE TOON ‘
His weight had gone up like a balloon
Well past his best when he joined us
The same as KLUIVERT, PEARCE and RUSH.
But now I see him in a different light

You our captain supreme
And me a Newcastle fan.

On your Tyneside return
And oh how we sang
You our captain fantastic
And me an ecstatic fan.

Just defend and […] -

Great poem Mike Bartram. Eddie was a legend, affectionately known in Liverpool as, “the first hooligan.” Even the hoolies were well dressed in those days. The amazing thing was he was only 26 when that picture was taken. He’d played for Everton youth team and was well known to the players. He never got arrested. They threw him out and he climbed back in, just in time for Derek Temples winner.
I used the picture of him being tackled to the ground on the front cover of my book, “Once Upon a rhyme in Football.” It’s worth looking on youtube and finding the re-enactment of the Wembley scene. Frank Skinner and Baddiel went around to Eddies home in the 1990’s and acted it out on the green outside. It’s hilarious, especially all the effort they put in to get Eddie sober enough to shoot the scene.

Hi Denys,
Yes Richard Williams you’re a brilliant wordsmith, my friend. When I first saw your football poetry I thought it was the superb Guardian sports and music writer. I once had the honour of sitting next to Richard Williams while at the Independent on the sports desk. He writes about music and sport with immense knowledge and authority. I’ve read a couple of Richard’s books recently. Great writer rather like you Richard Williams the Pompey fan. Congratulations on promotion.
