Forget about the millionaire players
Like managers they all come and go
But we have a special lady at United
Whose name you probably wont know.
Forty years she has worked at St James’s
As a valued member of […] -

As yet another manager rides into the sunset
Leaving the trophy cabinet still bare
It looks like Big Sam, from the Wanderers
Will soon arrive on a wing and a prayer. He may bring in some quality players
Treat […] -

As we enter the merry month of May
We have only Two games left to play
Blackburn at home and Watford away
Mouth watering fixtures I have to say.
And I now realise what Will Shakespeare meant
When he wrote of his […] -

In the mining town of Ashington
On the rugged Northumberland coast
On that glorious day in 66′
The local’s proposed a toast.
‘Here’s to our Jackie and Bobby’
Their voices rang out loud
And a small silver haired […] -

We were leading One nil
With the time almost up
One hand on the trophy
Of the Gateshead school’s cup.
The opposition’s PE teacher
Was acting as ref
We all called him sir
While they all called him Jeff.
He kept […] -

On June the 25th this year
Yes I’m aware It is out of season
But the crowds shall return to St James’s Park
And I’ll tell you the reason.
It is not to see the Kieron Dyer’s
Damien Duff’s or the Titus Bramble’s
For […] -

Michael’s in Dubai
While we are sat at St James’s Park
Watching grown men cry.

We could thrash Andora
Even with my missus Nora
Playing up front on her own
Axe that duo from Chelsea
And play my cousin Elsie
In midfield with her sister Joan.
It’s a game we must win
So bring in Dame Vera […] -

John McNamee never wore gloves
Hi-lites in his hair
Or diamonds in his lugs
They used to feed him on raw meat
My old man used to say
Ah wish he was still wor centre half today.

Fancy throwing celery
What’s that all about ?
This would never happen in the North
It would have to be down South.
Fancy throwing celery
To us Northerners a waste
Stick it in your pan of broth
It helps enhance the taste. -

Before this season is over
Before the last ball has been kicked
Before our frustrations have ended
Before the last turnstile has clicked.
Our clubs will send out reminders
That our money for next season is due

We never needed money
All we had was common sense
We always could get into the ground
Through the hole in the Gallowgate fence
It was our little secret
No one but us ever knew
How Sixteen little geordie kids
Could […] -

We have had many stunning photographs
On football what I remember
Like Diego Maradona’s hand of god
And Dave Mckay throttling Billy Bremner.

Which still brings out the smiles
The day we […] -

In the back of a Triumph Herald

Yes we had a bad result
But I don’t wish to apportion blame
I know the referee had a stinker

Great poem Mike Bartram. Eddie was a legend, affectionately known in Liverpool as, “the first hooligan.” Even the hoolies were well dressed in those days. The amazing thing was he was only 26 when that picture was taken. He’d played for Everton youth team and was well known to the players. He never got arrested. They threw him out and he climbed back in, just in time for Derek Temples winner.
I used the picture of him being tackled to the ground on the front cover of my book, “Once Upon a rhyme in Football.” It’s worth looking on youtube and finding the re-enactment of the Wembley scene. Frank Skinner and Baddiel went around to Eddies home in the 1990’s and acted it out on the green outside. It’s hilarious, especially all the effort they put in to get Eddie sober enough to shoot the scene.

Hi Denys,
Yes Richard Williams you’re a brilliant wordsmith, my friend. When I first saw your football poetry I thought it was the superb Guardian sports and music writer. I once had the honour of sitting next to Richard Williams while at the Independent on the sports desk. He writes about music and sport with immense knowledge and authority. I’ve read a couple of Richard’s books recently. Great writer rather like you Richard Williams the Pompey fan. Congratulations on promotion.
