Hold their hand, as today is that day.
Give them a hug, it can go a long way.
Give them your time, lend them an ear.
Because today is that time of year.
Be there to listen, to take in every word.
35 years on, […] -

No flags or banners will fly on the Kop tonight. On a big European night, such an unusual sight.
The Club have raised ticket prices without a care.
So, no banners big or small, waved high in the […]

Of footy in the 60’/ 70’S, I’ve been looking back.
Nobody took much notice of ‘the man in black’
Those were the greatest days it has to be said.
They carried a notebook and cards yellow and red.W […]

Passion our weapon, with added youthful zest.
A ‘reloaded Liverpool’ were back to their best!
This Final was a massive challenge, no doubt.

Barely a touch, they need to feel.
Over they roll with a yelp and squeal.
Rather embarrassing, I have to say.
But I guess, that’s just footy today.Stopping play with an injury to feign.
What became of […] -

God save our gracious King,
That’s what we kopites sing,
God save our King……
He made us victorious,
All those goals glorious,
Long to be one of us,
God save our King. -

I saw people hug, their strength to share.
The sense of grief, hung heavy in the air.
I saw beautiful flowers in the Spring sun.
I saw the damage ‘Hillsborough’ had done.I saw people reaching out to […]

On to 97 Avenue, I made my way.
Thinking of something new to say.
As over 34 years, I’ve said it all.
Same emotions with every roll call.
Only so many prayers that I know.
Only one place where they can […] -

I wrote nothing of the footy on the pitch.
I wrote about the greed and the filthy rich.
On the pitch upsets, meant nothing to me.
I wrote about the spineless and liars to see.Not a word […]

It’s a ‘Great World Cup’ I hear people say.
Last minute drama, a 100 minutes of play.
Shock after shock, underdogs are through.

In this sorry World Cup tale.
Above the roar of every goal.
Listen out for every lost soul.Beneath the sunny Qatari skies.
Listen to their desperate cries.

The beautiful game’s turned ugly,
not a pretty sight.
A thousand jagged stitches, scars
all left and right.
A hideous looking monster, ‘football’
only in name.

Hi Joe
Shouldn’t your title read your poem Farewell Europe England to everyone exccept Aston Villa ?
I know you mention them in your poem , but I do feel sorry for Villa re the national press .
Largely ignored. the hype was was all about Man City & Arsenal with a bit of a nod to the Hammers..but hardly a mention of Villa..
So well done to them

Hi Crispin. Chris Sutton on the radio has gone for a Chelsea v Coventry final. As we know anything can happen in the Cup, and I reckon we can go to the final.
We’re still in with a chance of the play offs too, so lots to go for.

Hey Kev
Let the masses drool over their odds on City v Unted Final, but who knows how pressure can hit.
Cov and Chels will be rightly labelled as having no chance..but hey …stranger things have happened..
so Chelsea v Coventry…that’s the Final for us!

Hi Crispin,
How are you doing mate? Yes, you’re probably right but hey football is all about emotion and passion and I just love writing about the game. I try to keep my poetry to a reasonable length but there’s so much to write about the game and its literature just lends itself naturally to poetry. Sometimes I just get completely carried and I do apologise for the length of my poetry but it’s a great thrill to be associated with Football Poets.
Cheers mate

There’s something so evocative and nostalgic for football fans the world over, in ‘revisiting’ old lost grounds.
Occasionally some remnants remain, with perhaps part of a wall or part or a stand or thre shape of a terrace, but often they are only still there in faded images and in our heads..
Great stuff Graham
