Remember the 96

Crispin is too modest to mention this, but he read his recent Hillsborough poem out on the 20th Anniversary of Hillsborough (15th April) on the radio, on the BBC Five Live ‘606 Phone In’ show (just after the Man Utd and Arsenal games.) This is further evidence that the Football Poets website is getting more and more media recognition.

——————————–

There were many there that day –

96 more than came back.

Football fans just the same as us.

Families – just the same as us.

They’ll never be forgotten.

They’ll Never Walk Alone.

This site will always remember them and honour them.

Today, 20 years on, we should remember too :

their families

their friends

the injured

those who survived

all those who were there on that fateful day

the Forest fans

the Wednesday fans

the players on the pitch

Liverpool FC, who conducted themselves so magnificently in the aftermatch

the city of Liverpool – who united in grief

the Emergency Services attending

But first and foremost …

the 96.

And I leave you with the words of a Liverpool native, from
Parry Maguire

The Day Truth Died (15th April 1989)

The LiverBird hangs her noble head
Her tears stains the earth with blood
For 96 of her children were lost that day
Her daughters and her sons

The chimes of Justice silent still
The days still waits to dawn
To herald in the words of truth
That died, still not reborn

A paper’s millions count the cost
Accountants shake their heads
Yet not for loved ones that day lost
But copies left on shelves

A grieving city closed its ranks
And comfort sought the light
The paper ran home to its banks
Then printed up its lies

Some politicians saw a chance
Poured bile into those wounds
“Robbin’ Scousers, thievin’ scum”
“The S** says so it’s true”

Leppings lane a killing field
Football’s Somme for sure
The 96 Souls remember them
Each name upon that wall.

For The 96 Men, Women and Children…
