1966 & All That

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 When I ask my Dad
‘Who’s the greatest?’
I’m never sure who he’s going to choose
Georgie Best
Or Stanley Matthews.
But it doesn’t much matter to me either way
‘Cause I never saw any of them play.

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 What am I supposed to do?
My generation needs its heroes too!

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 Georgie Best doesn’t mean that much to me
Just some drunken interviewee
On shows like Parky

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 And to me Greavsie just earnt his money
From saying, ‘Well Saint ain’t this game old & funny’
From being affable & rougey
A lovable old fogey
Who is able to recount on demand numerous & humourous old stories about past glories around the Christmas table.

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 Don’t get me wrong
I enjoy tapes of the genius of the 2 Bobbys & watching Pele play
As much as the next man
As much as any true football fan
Back when it all began
But let’s not pretend my friend
That we’ve reached the end
Of His masterplan.

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 All those magicians
Who had the power to freeze time.
Alive in the memory
Just unfortunatly not in mine

7 Leave a comment on verse 7 0 And hopefully the’ll be future memories
Otherwise, what would be the point?
There wouldn’t be any.

8 Leave a comment on verse 8 0 Just forever shaking our heads ruefully
Lie back
Think of England.
Beating Germany
4-2.
