1966 Rewritten

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 “There’s some people on the pitch.
They think that it’s all over.
One of them has blocked Hurst’s goalbound strike.”
And up and down the country, from Carlisle down to Dover,
They’re listening to Kenneth on the mike.

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 “They’re swarming on the pitch now but the whistle hasn’t blown.
There’s still about a minute left to play.
I can see the referee, down by the touchline, all alone,
Totally bemused by the affray.

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 ‘The game has been abandoned, England’s vict’ry has been smashed.
Extra time, alas, was not completed.
The golden cup of triumph from those English lips is dashed,
And Germany no longer is defeated.

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 ‘A replay has been ordered on strict crowd-encroachment grounds,
And rumour is, the venue is Berlin.
England have been fined a record forty million pounds,
And Germany are now odds on to win.”
