A Love Letter

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 I loved you as a schoolboy, running around the big field –
Usually right wing or goalie – collecting stickers in the
Playground. I loved you as a spotty teenager, idolising
The professionals every other Saturday with my mates.
I loved you in my twenties, a lonely, failing student
Finding consolation in the only game that mattered/matters.
I love you as a grown-up man – supposedly, I think – still
Collecting, still idolising, still making-believe, still escaping
From reality, from responsibilities, bills, mortgages etcetera.
I’ll love you when I’m old, a life of memories to keep me sane,
I hope…I’ll love you always, faithful to the ninetieth minute,
And the last-gasp winner in stoppage time. I love you, footy.
