A prayer to St Mel

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 St Mel he was a Briton
One of St Patricks own
He used to have a football park
On the outskirts of Athlone.

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 Now Moses is a Corkman
Big hat and cape a flowing
A man of extreme patience
Calm head and easy going

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 April fourth of ninety eight
A pilgrimage he planned
We’d pay respects to Mel
Our rosary beads in hand

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 Now drinking beer all day
Could land your soul in trouble
But still our prayers were answered
Hartigol then Jasons double

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 Remote pub, another decade
Raised a glass and drank it dry
I fell asleep as we took off
Back home, blink of an eye

Notes

Reminiscing about our FAI Cup semi final win in April 1998 away to Athlone at their old ground St Mels Park. Moses is a nickname for Jim Ryan, one of our greatest fans who organised that trip.

This was published in the Athlone Town match programme 29/5/2010 where we gladly served up a nice three points to a most grateful opposition.

Interesting Fact : St Mel was a nephew of St Patrick, our patron saint.
