A Refrain not entirely about the ref ‘n rain

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 We’d travelled
a hundred miles or more
but we came away from the ground
without the tenure of a score

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 And no it wasn’t ejection
that had us so dismayed;
but the fact, with kit intact
that it wasn’t even played!

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 Ahh, we drank, we drank, like silly old fools
but still there was nothing to see –
no result, less tumult, appearing on tv

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 We’d travelled
a thousand miles or more
and on the way, caused affray, as we wagered
many a tenner on the score

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 So imagine our surprise
when before our eyes
the man called referee –
held so much store, by the downpour
and so did decree –
that there’ll be no play
by the end of today
and sent us home sans victory

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 Ahh, we drank, we drank, like silly old fools
but still there was nothing to see –
and try as we might, there was no sight
of a result, videoprinting on tv!

Notes

the poem title came quickly
(following on from Robert Lane’s “A Poem not about poetry”
and Shay Klee’s “An Ode not about anodes”)

but the Dubliner’s tune of “7 Drunken Nights” came out of nowhere!

It’s a tune I’d wanted to plagiarise for a long time now,
without any success – in the end,
Robert Lane’s clever twist acted like a trip switch being re-set!
