A Vortex of Vanity

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 League aspirations have long gone
For now some succour can be won
Faint hope, at this dragons caustic lair
With a brave arbiter, strong and fair

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 Carras hand raised, face filled with dread
But Pepe rushed in, like the blood to his head
He makes a dogs dinner, defence was inert
Penalty given, South Korean hits dirt

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 Ravishing Ron give his hair one last check
With a Fonz-like flick our season he wrecks.
Silently I utter ill-will and profanity
As he vanishes into his vortex of vanity

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 Down to 10 men? We now have a chance
Serbias finest is caught in a trance
El Nino he pounces and punishes flaws
And sinks to his knees to milk the applause

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 The Kid again turns, defenders they flee
Plays in Steven, who’s brought to his knees
He steps up to take it, Tevez says go right
The runaway camera gets kissed with delight

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 The skew nosed assassins’ errors abound
The G man callously hauled to the ground
He misses El Fabio popping one in
He’s in the tunnel repenting his sin

7 Leave a comment on verse 7 0 Can anymore saline be rubbed in this wound?
Reina hits hopeful, Salt cellar stay tuned
Dossena chipped in, he’s now quite prolific
A wonderful Saturday, life is terrific.

Notes

I saw the phrase “vortex of vanity” in the Irish Sunday Independent last Sunday and felt compelled to write a poem.
