Adlestrop Part 1

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 Yes, I remember Adlestrop –
The name, because in 1966
The station name board was offered
Unwontedly. To Swindon, June the 6th.

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 The dream wished. Someone cleared his throat.
No-one had heard of Adlestrop
In the Swindon Rail Museum.
England won the World Cup.

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 And Doctor Beeching cut his swathe
Through meadowsweet, and haycocks dry,
No whit less still and lonely fair
Than Wembley Towers in the sky.

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 And for that minute it was all over.
Edward Thomas killed at Arras
And again at Swindon some 50 years later.
But Geoff Hurst scored. That might last.

Notes

One Adlestrop name board was saved – it is in the village bus shelter.
The other was offered to Swindon and then to Oxford. It was destroyed as you will see in part 2. What a tragedy.
