All Over Now And Gone

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 and so it’s done all over now and gone
all ended thus in seas of white and blue
as Rome ignites and Paris growls
to shed long tears on moments lost
whilst Italy can dance and sing
as car horns blare long through the night
and drink the cup we supped from once

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 a game that hinged and swung and swayed
and frittered on a butt unseen
as we are left to think and dream
in verse and heart and head and soul
on all that could and should have been

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 gone now the great Ikea fool
the charlatan we seek to blame
however could we be so blind
and how could we be fooled again
by promises as false as fame
by one who’s passion lay elsewhere

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 gone now the flags on walls and shops
in villages in hills and towns
gone too our hopes like paper boats
all dashed with prehistoric quotes
from Motty and his hapless friend
those chestnut gems of punditry
from Wrighty Shearer and the rest

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 the tacky pricey merchandise
and trappings of our shop-led times
in games that soared and dipped with dives
and shameless claims between the bores

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 but I’ll remember Ghana’s grace
and Argentina at their best
the disappointment of Brazil
the power cut on extra time
the feeling in each pub and home
the fans the faces and Berlin

7 Leave a comment on verse 7 0 and what for England now ..you cry
not much if this is all we are
some wake up call long overdue
and major realisation time
Andorra soon who lie in wait
a ‘mighty game’ like all we play
for you and I it seems must walk
and be condemned and still compelled
like endless patriotic fools
to meet and pray in grounds and homes
in streets and bars in faith and tears
to ever stare with downward eyes
and live in hope but ever ask …

8 Leave a comment on verse 8 0 why oh why ….
is it always
so hard…..
watching England ?

Notes

A big thank you to all who have contributed the 351World Cup poems so far (do continuer to explore) and to all those who invited me to run workshops during the tournament.Special thanks to Suzi Raymond at Chelsea FC (Education) for finally dragging me into the 21st century and getting me hooked on: Iinteractive White Boards, Overhead Projectors, PowerPoint Slide Shows, Laptops,Memory Sticks/ USB ports and Palm Pilots! ! It’s a far cry from my faithful flip chart and those gorgeous blackboards and chalk in Porto! Thanks also to all the schools, Kerry and Anna at West Ham United, HTV, BBC and extreme thanks to Thomas Richter and all at the British Council in Berlin for inviting me to perform there ..It has all been an incredibly moving experiece. Big shout outs also due to Keith Butler for setting up the ‘Our World Cup’ site , for putting me up in Craven Arms and for single-handedly sorting me out technologically ..To World Cup Willie and Peter Goulding for relentlessly covering every game and match day in wonderful verse on the site. . Cheers also to Jules Rimet, Mr Butler for his haikus, for lending me the School IT Dept and some sellotape at Brockworth School, Eddie Gibbons, Kevin Raymond, Christopher T, SB Ingle ,Denys, Khadim, Annette, Tri Tran, Number 10, Alan McKean, Mark Merryman and all the new contributors throughout the tournament and to so many more I may have forgotten to include.. Some of you will just be relieved that I haven’t subjected you to much Crispin “poetry” myself! I ‘ve been trying to focus on getting to and from everywhere, while keeping this section up-dated and to ensure only the ‘real’ poetry appears. We do receive an incredible amount of poor quality material that has to be sifted through and often deleted .Without wishing to totally discourage new writing, we have to maintain certian standards..Go well..and keep on… Crispin
