Always About The Feeling

and you’re suddenly part of it all
what were the nerves like before it began
when you’re itching to get on the ball?
there on the touchline about to go on
the rush is too strange to explain
but I’d swop all my badges and old star wars figures
to feel that same feeling again

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 yes it’s always about that first feeling
and nobody else understands
be you referee player reporter or poet
ball boy or ball girl or fan

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 and what was it like in that moment
bathed in that wonderful sound
can you recall the excitement
when you first entered the ground?
when butterflies dance in your tummy
adrenaline pumps through your veins
there’s something quite magic about it
that no-one can ever explain?

hook line and sinker for life
when did the passion take over your world
when was it more than a vibe?
and how did you do on that thunderous day
was it frightening the skill and the pace
when did you realise this is my goal
what made it click into place?

carved in our being like stone
feelings of watching and playing together

Notes

I’ve been working a lot lately with schools and in football club Study Support Centre on “feelings”. How easy it is to reveal our emotions on the pitch or in the stands…and yet how difficult we sometimes find it at other times to show our feelings in words, on paper or on-line. I love sharing ideas with students, primary and secondary, most of whom have their own social networking sites and pages, who blog regularly and talk often openly online about their feelings and themselves. So it’s always intersting to see if they will open up in verse in a workshop on football with others around them ! What I always ask them too, is when we write a poem, a blog or a ‘biog’ on-line – who are we actually writing it to? Our readers , other poets,? the World, “the general public”, the media, our “friends” (added and real!) or our (imaginary?) millions of fans out there! In fact is anyone reading it or are we just actually having a really good one-to-one conversation with ourselves? It’s all about expression I guess. Something this site is and always has been about – I’d like to think .Your football poems please .Emotions and feelings on playing – whenever you do or did.
