Am I Missing Something…Here?

When that first whistle blows
A home fan’s very existence
Can take on a whole new meaning.

At varying times during a game,
According to him or her, the away fans:
Don’t speak proper English, live in abject poverty.
Come from the wrong part of the country,
Belong to a race or religion that’s up for ridicule.

All of the above labels for human beings come in to play
On that very first blow from a referee’s whistle
At an association football match. A sport.

Whilst our glossy match day programmes advise us with concern:
Possession of celery, and smoking in the stadium is banned,
And that we must stay seated through-out the match
So the punters sat behind us can see all the action.
Or we’ll be evicted from the ground.
