An Idol Returns In The Interval!

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 When his name was announced at the interval
Fella’s stopped munching their pies
As young kids tuned in with a quizzical look
Their dads sang his name out on high.

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 A little bald geezer stepped on to the pitch
Undaunted, from a time in our past
From those days before football was about being rich
When our idols played games hard and fast.

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 The wee man was a miner or so it was said
When we brought him up to The Smoke
We thought that Ken Bates had gone off his head
When we first saw the height of this bloke.

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 Size. It don’t matter when yer willing to battle
And fight for yer place in the team
And us fans who were guilty of pre judging his mettle
Soon changed our minds, as he fought for the cause with esteem.

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 Wee Patsy, Dixon and Speedooo
We cheered and we followed in faith
To the strangest of places where we let it be known
We could win the div two league race.

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 He bowed to the crowd,
We sang his name out aloud
He smiled, as his battered legs trod on old ground.

7 Leave a comment on verse 7 0 There was rapturous applause
From his old haunts four corners
As “Speedooo”, rang out from the Stamford Bridge crowd!

Notes

David (Speedooo) Speedie, in his day, was just awesome.

I never knew who he argued with more, the opposition as they tried to kick lumps out of him, or his own team mates who would get a right rollicking for not passing to him!

When Speedooo came out on to the pitch at half-time on Saturday, he got a terrific reception from the home fans, and rightly so.

peace.
