An Inextricable Link

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 Football and beer
an inextricable link
jaunt to the pub
then off to the game
snow, rain or shine
whatever the weather
debate with your chums
at the bar and on the terrace.

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 Football was played
on grass or on mud
while beer was supped
from glasses straight
now the grass and the glass
will be from plastic
in the name of profit
and abhorrent health and safety.

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 We stood for decades
on crumbling terraces
and lined up against
wooden counters in bars
but it’s all “Sit down folks”
wherever you go
in the name of profit
and abhorrent health and safety.

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 No longer about tradition
nor our entertainment
football is about results
and so is the pub
debased enjoyment
removed exhilaration
time will come soon when
we can only watch on the telly.

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 Football and beer
an inextricable link
in isolation at home
to view the next game
can of beer in one hand
the remote in the other
to witness the sad demise
of our favourite preoccupation.
