Another man down

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 It’s been the worse year for loss, that we can ever remember,
There’s another man down, before the end of December.
He was a friend a brother and somebody’s son,
A husband a father, a special someone.

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 Rich, poor or famous, or just ‘one of us’,
Whichever road they walked, it was ever thus.
Another man down, in our tears and our laughter,
Their memories will remain, for many years after.

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 Another man down, he may have left kids and a wife,
All the more reason, to rejoice in his life.
When we think of him, we should not be in pain,
We should remember the sunshine, and not just the rain.

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 Let’s raise a glass and a smile, and still talk of him lately,
Another man down, we will all miss him greatly.
Keep sharing his memory, whilst we all still have breath,
His life must not end just because of his death.

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 To all those that have passed on, in this terrible year,
We are all so thankful, for the time you were here.
Our lives have been stronger because you were around,
So, the toast from us all is ‘another man down’.

Notes

2016 has seen so many people pass away from all walks of life. There have been many losses to the football family from individual supporters through to the terrible tragedy that saw the lives of almost every member of the Chapecoense Football Club. I wrote this poem a couple of days after the murder of a Stockport County fan Chris Thompson, who was on a night out for Christmas. Tommo was the life and soul of every group of people he was in. He was a fair bit younger than me and not someone I could call a close friend but nevertheless I had met him on numerous occasions and I am good friends with many of his circle of friends who still go and watch The Hatters as they search for a way back into The Football League from the 6th tier that the club now finds itself in. Every man (and woman) that has passed on is somebody’s child and as a father and grandfather myself I feel pain and sorrow for those who have suffered loss this past year. #RIP
