Away Days (1)

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 Racing down country lanes,
avoiding busy motorways in those days
we made our way to St James:
my first away game as a Town fan.
Innate power of Austin Allegro
unleashed on the Devon countryside
as we sped towards the ground.
Inside we watched from wooden seats
as Town took an early lead,
then added another to the
delight of the travelling hordes.
Jostled from behind by two likely lads
when the Grecians pulled one back,
but Swindon held on to consolidate
their promotion push.
First away day a 2-1 win
and I was hooked.

Notes

My first away game supporting Swindon Town was a trip to St James’ Park Exeter in April 1979. 80 odd league grounds have been added to the list since then & I will be writing about some of them in the weeks to come. Wondered if others wanted to write about their experiences as an away fan as trips to different grounds often provide the best memories for loyal fans up & down the country.
