Barcelona, Spain 1982, Style…

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 Brazil had it in great abundance
Zico, Socrates, Falcao
Samba mad fans in their thousands
Who turned up to cheer the team on to victory
Nothing it seemed could stand in their way, could it?
They were surely… un-stoppable.

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 Paolo Rossi
Recently back playing again after a two year ban
And selected by pipe smoking coach Enzo Bearzot
To the chagrin of the powerful Italian football press
Scores a hat-trick as Brazil needing only a draw to qualify
Are eliminated by three goals to two.

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 And Paolo Rossi?
He excels to almost single handily win the World Cup for Italy
And finishes top scorer to boot in a year fans often remember
When they speak of classic football matches
Played on the counter attack
In the style of…. worthy World Champions.

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 Italia Campione Del Mundo, Espana 1982.

Notes

A few lines in praise of one of my favourite World Cup games from Spain 1982. The goals from this game are on u tube, if you want to see them, but the whole game is even better, so check out Goal, a dvd or video of said years competition with Sean Connery doing a blinding job of the commentary.

Included is some terrific behind the scenes footage of Colonel Gaddafi* (Claudio Gentile) getting stuck into Diego Maradona during the Argentina v Italy tie, which is so painful to watch it almost hurts even now, with the ref doing sweet FA to protect the boy wonder.

*Colonel Gaddafi is Claudio Gentiles nickname because he was born in Libya and looks a lot like The Colonel.

Peace.

Kev.
