Bearsted Football Club

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 As I roved out upon a glum
And chilling Winter’s day,
I chanced upon a stadium,
Along down Maidstone way.
Though tempted by a cosy pub,
I plumped for Bearsted Football Club.

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 I stood beside a man that day
Who smelt of wispy smoke.
“Not Chelsea and United, eh?”
I muttered, as a joke.
He proferred me some ready rub,
Then spoke of Bearsted Football Club.

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 “As man and boy, I’ve watched this team,”
He said with gentle voice.
“Through thick and thin, at each extreme,
It’s been my club of choice.
Bewitched me, by Beelzebub,
Did this dear Bearsted Football Club.

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 ‘Across the land, one hears the call,
“Come follow every week!”
Local lads who give their all,
This team is not unique.
Communities should have a hub,
And ours is Bearsted Football Club.

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 ‘The game of football’s undergone
Great change in many places,
But here it’s spirit lives, upon
A non-professional basis.
Oh yes, we’re close to football’s nub,
Down here at Bearsted Football Club.

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 ‘For it’s a club that welcomes all,
The parents, sons and daughters,
Sending out the trumpet call
To players and supporters,
And thus the fox instructs the cub
To follow Bearsted Football Club.

7 Leave a comment on verse 7 0 ‘You’re right, young man, for it is far
From Chelsea and United,
For here we do not bear the scar
By which the game’s been blighted.”
Just then, he paused to cheer a sub
Brought on for Bearsted Football Club.

8 Leave a comment on verse 8 0 “I’m sorry, sir,” I answered back,
“My words were meant but lightly.
I’ve glimpsed the wisdom that I lack –
I say that most contritely.”
And as I doused my embered stub,
I roared on Bearsted Football Club.

Notes

For Steve Taylor and the lads in Maidstone – carrying on the true spirit of football.
