Because His Skin Is Black!

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 We watched you in the warm up
As skilful as Wee Pat
A smile upon your bright young face
We saw from where we sat
As game got into motion
That smile sadly disappeared
As fascist thugs and racist mugs
Booed at you and jeered
Why did they have to pick on you
With monkey chants and cracks?
The reason is I’m sad to say
Because your skin is black!

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 Nobody is perfect
Not everybody’s great
Where human beings are concerned
Errors will be made
Opposition fans will boo you
It’s all part of the game
But when your own fans throw bananas
At you, it’s bordering on insane
We stood and watched like helpless sops
And did nothing at all
We were as guilty as the racists
Although we didn’t bawl
A young mans career was ruined
He’ll never get it back
The reason for such hatred?
Because his skin is black!

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 At Hillsborough one evening
When we were hung out to dry
By Owls who were over physical
And like Wilkinson so sly
You and Wee Pat pulled Blue pride back
And got us in the game
No racist chants that evening
“That boy’s headed for great fame”
It sadly didn’t continue
They were soon at it again
Your confidence was shattered
You didn’t want the ball
I can’t say that I blame you
What with all those racist calls?
It’s said that it is better now
Than it was way back
Why did they hate this fine young man?
Because his skin is black!

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 John Neal and Ken Bates
Comforted you as things got out of hand
Better men than you or I
Would have turned and ran
Why was no-one ejected
Why was no-one banned
If we are to get rid of racism
We all must make a stand
Nobody should just stand there
Whilst racists thugs attack
The reason for their hatred?
Because his skin is black!

Notes

I don’t need to say who this poem is about, but you all get the gist I’m sure. This boy is having a bit of a bad time of it at the moment or so we’re told. True Blues will know who the poem is about and will remember with shame, how this boy was treated and just lost his confidence completely, so much that he was afraid to receive the ball for fear that the racist nutters would just start all over again if he made a bad pass or something. A terrible period in the history of Chelsea Football Club this is I’m very sad to say. Has it got better than it was?
Umm…..not too sure about that!

peace.
