Blessing in Disguise

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 I don’t look much like a goalkeeper.

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 I’m five foot-not-a-lot
and I can’t touch the crossbar
without jumping

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 I’m the shortest in my team too,
mind you, at sixteen I’m also the youngest*
which makes it okay
I suppose.

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 Because I ain’t the tallest,
I had to compensate for my shortcomings,
find other ways
of guarding the gaping goalmouth.

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 I had to hone my reflexes
and build up the strength in my legs
to get to those high crosses
and snatch from the heads of lanky forwards,
had to agility-train for those top-corner saves
that the taller keepers don’t have to worry about.

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 Being a short goalie
just isn’t funny
but I tell you this,
it’s made me work.

Notes

*Some of the others are in their 20s and early 30s so this is my excuse for the meantime anyway!
