Boro v Charlton (28-08-2005)

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 The victory at Birmingham showed the Boro lads are gelling,
And the expectation of the fans is now positively swelling,
The Addicks’ start’s been excellent: they have not yet dropped a point,
So, let’s get stuck in and seek to put their noses out of joint.

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 Morrison takes on Powell, who is not getting any younger,
And demonstrates, though still so young, he has the necessary hunger,
The ball’s chipped well, into the box, by Reiziger, bold as brass,
But Yak then couldn’t quite connect although he did applaud the pass.

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 Downing takes on Luke Young and he leaves the man for ‘dead,’
And Yakubu knows he should have scored to put his team ahead,
He ghosted in to head the ball as in on goal it’s whipped,
But he couldn’t hit the target and above the bar it zipped.

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 What pace from Dennis Rommedahl, who hurtles down the right!
And quickly leaves those marking him completely out of sight,
He totally burnt up our defence and a goal looked on the cards,
In 10.2 short seconds he can run a hundred yards.

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 Charlton are bursting forward but, how they must be hurtin’,
At the miss by Darren Bent who had received the ball from Smertin,
How he completely missed the target no-one really understands,
But the ball he then applauded with his head held in his hands.

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 Boro lose possession and there’s a charge on goal by Bent,
When Ehiogu and Southgate were a wee touch negligent,
Schwarzer rushes out from goal, as cool as a cucumber,
And gives a ‘wake up’ call, to rouse the Boro from their slumber.

7 Leave a comment on verse 7 0 Queudrue, from way out on the left, then sent a long ball curling,
And it was then caught on the wind, inside the ground that’s swirling,
Though obviously meant to be a cross, he had the ‘keeper harassed,
Had it actually found the Addicks’ net he’d have surely been embarrassed.

8 Leave a comment on verse 8 0 The fans are growing restless and they cannot comprehend,
How the Boro, for long periods, in their own half are being penned,
McClaren’s on the touchline; he wants his lads much more decisive,
For the Addicks, with their greater speed, are positive and incisive.

9 Leave a comment on verse 9 0 Murphy brings in Rommedahl and into the box he ‘flew,’
After taking on, successfully, our Frenchman, Franck Queudrue,
Yet his final cross was one of which he’ll really not be proud,
As ‘Come On Boro’ has the lads now lifted by the crowd.

10 Leave a comment on verse 10 0 The way the game is going, with the Addicks holding sway,
One fears this might turn out to be not the Boro’s day,
Then Rommedahl, the speedy Dane, who’s tortured us throughout,
Struck clinically for the visitors: could this now end up as a rout?

11 Leave a comment on verse 11 0 But what a pass by Murphy, to bring the Boro great dejection,
As Rommedahl just ghosted in and timed it to perfection,
The finish was immaculate and he’s happy, with good reason,
For things get ever-better in this great start to their season.

12 Leave a comment on verse 12 0 Boro tried their hardest, immediately to respond,
But they had no real magician, to wave his magic wand,
Then Addicks were in panic as by their fingertips they hung,
A ball, goal-bound, from Franck Queudrue’s cleared off the line by Young.

13 Leave a comment on verse 13 0 Morrison received the ball and struck it with great might,
And the ‘keeper saved magnificently, though it came at a good height,
It seemed destined for the corner but then Andersen didn’t waive,
As he ‘flew’ towards his right to make a truly wondrous save.

14 Leave a comment on verse 14 0 Amid Boro boos, the first half ends, in absolute frustration,
Great things are now required to rectify the situation,
We’ve huffed and we’ve puffed, sometimes we’ve flattered to deceive,
And victory today might prove impossible to achieve.

15 Leave a comment on verse 15 0 ———-

16 Leave a comment on verse 16 0 In the dim light of the tunnel I can see silhouettes,
Of Gaizka Mendieta and Emanuel Pogatetz,
Who, it is hoped, will now somehow stem the tide,
Which threatens to engulf Boro in their very own Riverside.

17 Leave a comment on verse 17 0 Morrison and Queudrue have now been replaced,
So, can the new man possibly bring success posthaste?
All eyes are on our very new acquisition,
And everyone is praying for a match-winning exhibition.

18 Leave a comment on verse 18 0 Onwards charge the Addicks and, goodness gracious!
A back-heel from Murphy was quite audacious,
Powell played into the box and Bent then swooped,
But Schwarzer somehow saved and the Boro re-grouped.

19 Leave a comment on verse 19 0 On the left wing, Pogatetz is loudly yelling,
As hope among Boro fans is clearly swelling,
His ball, whipped into the box, was really great,
But the Addicks, once again, did not capitulate.

20 Leave a comment on verse 20 0 After ten short minutes Mendi looked concerned,
And Maccarone’s coming on, a chance that he has earned,
It’s a move which, it seems, is so very well endorsed,
But sad, because, through injury, it has so quickly been enforced.

21 Leave a comment on verse 21 0 So Boro are now playing with three men up front,
And the fans are so concerned as we’ve not been in the hunt,
In a scramble, from a corner, Mark Viduka called “that’s mine,”
But it was cleared then, by Perry, from off the line.

22 Leave a comment on verse 22 0 Southgate loses out to Rommedahl, who is getting ever-brisker,
Then Bent’s first time effort misses out by just a whisker,
And Schwarzer, clearly beaten, to his right-hand side,
Breathed a great sigh of relief, as it flashed just wide.

23 Leave a comment on verse 23 0 Yak found Massimo about twenty yards from goal,
And he speedily and expertly had the ball under control,
After just one glance he then quickly stabbed it,
It went through the ‘keeper’s legs but he somehow grabbed it.

24 Leave a comment on verse 24 0 The Addicks won a free kick, with which not everyone agreed,
And they promptly took advantage then to double their lead,
With a sudden sucker punch we were caught stone cold,
By some rank bad defending which was sad to behold.

25 Leave a comment on verse 25 0 So the crowd’s now streaming from the Riverside,
Having watched their team committing suicide,
But a victory for the Addicks is so thoroughly deserved,
And their hundred-per-cent start is now obviously preserved.

26 Leave a comment on verse 26 0 At the very last gasp, the visitors made it three,
As the Boro displayed again uncharacteristic lethargy,
Darren Bent was the ‘culprit,’ who stole the final glory,
And the boos around the Riverside told their very own story.

27 Leave a comment on verse 27 0 That was the very worst performance in over four long years,
Totally uninspiring and brought lots of tears,
Despite the long-awaited debut of Emanuel Pogatetz,
That was just about as bad as it ever gets.
