Bring back Milton

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0
A team made up entirely of former FA Cup winners, could enter next season’s FA Cup.
The idea is that the legends join a non-league club but will only play in the cup competition.
(for more on the story – see notes below)

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 If it were April 1st
I’d afford a smile
But as it’s not
I’ll run a mile!

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 The FA Cup
Is not a charitable competition
This route hurls headlong
To veritable perdition

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 If they were truly fit
Then perhaps, a real news story
But why deprive
The meritous of their glory?

Notes

Title came from looking up the meaning of perdition

Definitions of Perdition:
noun: (Christianity) the abode of Satan and the forces of evil; where sinners suffer eternal punishment

Example: “Hurl’d headlong…To bottomless perdition, there to dwell” – John Milton

Story :

Proposed team members could include :
Paul Gascoigne, Ray Parlour (35), Lee Sharpe (37), Bryan Robson (51), Dave Beasant (49), Graeme Le Saux (40) and Roberto di Matteo (38).

This idea is the brainchild of ‘Toast Events’ who organise the Legends football matches.

The intention is that they get all their players signed up for a real team (they’ve put the proposal to the world’s oldest club : Sheffield FC) and these players then play in the First Qualifying Round of the FA Cup, in order to raise funds for charity.

However, this would of course mean that the clubs regular league players would miss out on their own dream of playing in the FA Cup – to give way for those who’ve already won it!

This has to be the most ridiculous non-runner I’ve ever heard in football?

yes, perhaps well-intentioned, but which callous chairman would deny his regular players their chance of glory?
