1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 Last time out
It took a court case to provide the winner –
If only they’d had the ‘value of hindsight’ as a witness!

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 Then, it was just a tiny minority of votes in Florida
That swung the result
And I wonder back then, could they even place Iraq on a map?

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 Just 537 votes to be exact –
To you and me :
That’s almost a match attendance

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 Take the Scottish 2nd & 3rd Divisions, last weekend
The nearest being :
Stenhousemuir v East Fife, 512, witnessing seven goals

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 Stranraer v Arbroath, 558 hardy souls
Or in the FA Cup Fourth Qualifying Round
Brigg Town v Halesowen, 588 paying guests

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 Just proving everyone’s vote is so important – my case rests :
Who’d have thought
That just those assembled

7 Leave a comment on verse 7 0 At Stranraer or Brigg, in another place
At another time
Could’ve changed the course of history?

Notes

Sticking my nose into other people’s business –
I’m almost sounding like a Guradian reader!

Editor’s hat on : and spelling like one too!
A genuine typo.

For the record :

November 3rd 2004 :
George W Bush elected for a second term of office as President of the USA.

Matches played Saturday October 30th, 2004 :

FA Cup Fourth Qualifying Round
Brigg Town 1 Halesowen 4

Scottish 2nd Division
Stranraer 2 Arbroath 1

Scottish 3rd Division
Stenhousemuir 5 East Fife 2

By rights, once you add in all the players and officials and staff, to the 512 fans,
this fixture is probably the nearest to that magical / tragical 537 figure.
And allows for a few spoilt Chad’s.

PS – I’d like to change the poem to include the
Stranraer & Brigg Town club ground’s names –
can anyone help me out?

PPS –
as a long standing East Fife fan, it pains me to broadcast that result.
