Champions League Immortals

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 We expected :
A peerless Pirlo
A mighty Maldini
A crisp Crespo
A nascent Nesta
A chuffed Cafu
A didactic Dida

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 We half expected :
A barren Baros
A calamitous Kewell
A hapless Hyppia
A shabby Alonso
A lost Garcia
A dippy Dudek

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 By half-time, expectations were fully met.
And many a bet, forecast a rout.

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 How wrong we were.

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 What we got, was :
A Triumphant Traoré
A Smug Smicer
A Heroic Hamann
A Rampant Riise
A Radiant Rafa the Gaffer
A Garrulous Gerrard

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 And Jamie Carragher – awesome, immense
and in that tense
moment before the penalty shootout
he reminded the black clad Jerzey
of past exploits
and previous heroes
all spawned from the banks of the Mersey.

7 Leave a comment on verse 7 0 What an inspiration.

Notes

Champions League final, 25/05/2005.

Liverpool 3 AC Milan 3.
Liverpool win on penalties, after being 3-0 down at half time.

An incredible game, an incredible fight-back.
Even the players admitted afterwards that they didn’t think it was possible, at half-time.

I cannot adequately put into words the emotions played out on the night.
I’m sure our Liverpool poets will do that, when they come back down to earth!!

Congratulations to a team who never accepted defeat.
