Chelsea 6 Newcastle Utd 5

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 Sept the 10th 1958
To have been at ‘The Bridge’
Must have been great
A Six Five Special they said at the time
Joy and heartache on The Thames and The Tyne
Young Greaves scored Two and twice smacked the bar
The Geordies hit Five with Len White their star
A wet Wednesday night I seem to recall
But a glorious memory of attacking football
And now up here on Tyneside what do we see
In Six premier league games we have scored only Three
Minimal goal attempts in a disastrous run
And gone are  the ‘Len Whites’ who scored goals for fun.

Notes

The 2 sides meet at SJP on Saturday 19th of Sept and I suspect if there are 11 goals this time then Chelsea might well get double figures……And I’m a Toon fan.

Editor Note: Believe it or not John, I was at that game and out late aged 10. Besotted with Greavesie but excited by the Newcastle team of that time. In typical unpredictable Chelsea fashion our previous opening games that season ended :
Man U 5 Chelsea 2,
Chelsea 4- Spurs 2,
Chelsea 6-Wolves 2 (Greaves 5)
Spurs 4 Chelsea 0-my first away evening mid week game !)
Portsmouth 2-Chelsea 2
Chelsea 6 Newcastle Utd 5.
Scored 20 Conceded 22!
One thing we did share with the Magpie were our poor defences.
That season Chelsea finished 14th scoring 78 and conceding 98
Newcastle Utd finished 12th scoring 80 and conceding 80!

Keep on John~Crispin
