Clapping In The Face of Sorrow

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 22 players and officials
thousand upon thousand of silent spectators
family and loved ones
across the land stand and applaud
sixty seconds clapping in the face of sorrow
the new moving tribute for a life gone
what else can we do?
for we are here but they are gone

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 how good to see players then
for so many their pockets full to bursting
reaching out and donating
to a grieving family

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 I don’t know who it was said it
during these last sad days
player, manager or colleague?
that every day millions
get up and head off a for day’s work
but when one of them doesn’t come home
anywhere on this planet
in our global football family
we all feel it
as if we we knew them personally

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 above all it’s the poignant reminder
be we 20 30 60 or 70
of the fragility of life
and on New Year’s Day
all pre match applause
was for Phil
a life lived
a life loved
a live shared
a life taken
too soon

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 for all Phil’s family and friends
our thoughts of peace
and all our strongest thoughts
of love and hope right now
