Come and have a go if you think you’re Bard enough

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 11 poets take on the world
Managed by Roger McGough
They send out a challenge to other poets
Have a go if you’re Bard enough.
John Hegley is between the posts
A wordsmith who is hard to beat
The trouble is his notebooks full
He never has a clean sheet.
The formation they’ve gone for is 4-3-3
At the Back they have Wendy Cope,
John Betjeman, Ogden Nash and Dr Seuss
Opposing Attackers don’t stand a hope.
With Zephaniah, Milligan and Henri
The midfield has gone for flair
Their Control and amazing ability
Keeping the words up in the air.
Upfront there’s player-manager McGough
And two surprising selections
Ray Davies and PG Wodehouse
Not renowned for their poet connections.
But both of them have great word-play
And Wodehouse is the master supreme.
So there shouldn’t be any question
About them deserving to be in this team.
So come and watch this team Word-Play
I promise you you’ll be in heaven.
But can you imagine the ticket price
To see the Word Jugglers XI.

Notes

Although Wodehouse did write Light Verse and Lyrics, it is not what he is famous for. But IMO he is the greatest user of the English Language ever.

Ray Davies needs no explanation.
