Come on you Royals!

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 Reading regular for
forty plus years,
John stood on the Tilehurst
Road End in all weathers,
supporting his heroes:
Friday from the seventies
and later lanky striker Senior;
Sanchez related in some
way to the bloke next door;
add midfield stalwarts Mick
Gooding and Phil Parkinson
to the mix, ironic really that
he won’t be around to see
the Royals pitting their wits
against the strutting Bantams
in the quarter final
with their former player at the helm.
’98 saw a move away from Elm
Park to a brand spanking new
ground, the Madejski and now
he got a season ticket,
watching as Reading
plied their trade in the Premiership.
New breed of heroes to see now:
from the back Federici, Murty,
Kebe, Long and still his support
as strong as ever;
now joined by his grandchildren
who can keep his legacy alive:
bedecked in blue and white scarves,
they can bellow out John’s mantra:
‘Come on you Royals!’

Notes

Poem written in tribute to my father in law and Reading fan John Rowell who sadly passed away last week.
