Crispin in the Library

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 He came to Coventry by train
to perform his one man show,
in the huge central library
and his poems they did flow.

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 Sadly the audience wasn’t large
but Crispin didn’t really care,
he just carried on regardless
and I was so glad to be there.

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 He looked like a real poet
with a cool hat upon his head,
and even without a microphone
you could hear everything he said.

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 We chuckled at his anecdotes
and his tales about Chelsea,
the days of the mighty Shed
Tambling and of course Greavesie.

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 He waxed lyrical about Roy of the Rovers
the superstar from the comic page,
we discovered he’s Crispin’s football hero
this striker who never seemed to age.

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 Then the mood did darken a little
of a story not about any score,
but when rival soldiers played football
in between fighting during the First World War.

7 Leave a comment on verse 7 0 So keep up the good work Crispin
and never stop your football chat,
you’re the beautiful game’s John Cooper Clarke
as you perform poetry in your pork pie hat !

Notes

I watched Crispin perform his poetry on Saturday here in Coventry and although the audience was quite small I know that us that attended really enjoyed it.

Crispin if you ever return here I’ll make sure you get a bigger crowd as I know my football mates will love your show ! thanks anyway.

Editor Note: Lovely mate. Thanks Kev (he said blushing). I’m glad I have a few hats to hide under. I just imagined at the time, that all the people reading or on PCs quietly, around and above us (until I got there!) were all really listening to me ? . On another side, it’s always good to blow a whistle and wave rattles in libraries or play the casio !.

In years gone by, I always hated that awful “Shsssssh …this is a library” thing . Thankfully they are much more community driven these days. Ours is run by volunteers here in Stroud. Long may it and all libraries survive.
