Crusade

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 Football’s our religion,
football is our faith.
Finney give us piety,
Charlton give us grace.

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 Each World Cup or Euro
we set out on crusade.
Though we pray for victory
always we’re outplayed.

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 The coach is really our high priest
That all religions need.
Shower him with riches
Though he won’t succeed.

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 Once we were the champions,
Once we had it all
back in 1966,
Then there came the fall.

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 Once there lived a prophet,
Ramsey was his name.
He died and went to heaven
but he will come again.

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 The mercy of the football god
is hard to understand.
Another quarter final,
Still no promised land.

7 Leave a comment on verse 7 0 We are football’s chosen,
With football in our souls,
more blessed than the foreigners
Except they score more goals.

Notes

It’s an obvious theme – football being a religion. But it seems an especially fitting comparison when the national team always fails: a testing of the faithful.
