Dark Days for Rovers

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 ‘Tis dark days for Rovers, their annual search
For a tenancy is getting tougher.
Magnanimous Bohs left the Hoops in the lurch,
And, as usual, the fans have to suffer.
A trawl around clubs with their cap in their hand,
Though needful, is humiliating.
Once they were seen as the best in the land,
But their value is depreciating.

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 ‘Tis dark days for Rovers, finances are dire,
With many good players offloaded.
It’s not to this state that their fans would aspire,
And confidence must be eroded.
The forthcoming season might well be the last
They spend in the higher division.
‘Twill be hard to accept that their best days are past,
And their future is swathed in derision.

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 ‘Tis dark days for Rovers, the great Tallaght dream
Once kept all their fans optimistic.
But though they’re determined, it largely does seem
To be more and more unrealistic.
The ground lies half-finished, the stands are half-built,
A magnificent, terrible folly,
For the blossoms of hope are now starting to wilt
‘Pon the brittle twigs of melancholy.

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 ‘Tis dark days for Rovers, though many might say,
‘Tis darkest just prior to dawn’s light.
But only if sure that the brightness of day
Will follow the blackness of night.
For the night’s darkest hour lies just before death,
And few in their plight have recovered,
And soon we could mourn o’er the Hoops’ dying breath,
If a miracle cure’s not discovered.

Notes

Really fear the worst for Shamrock Rovers. Hopefully they’ll prove me wrong.
