Datemi (Give me)

Fatemi dimenticare.
Consolatemi.

Give me a poultice to heal my wound.
Give me a painkiller to soothe my pain.
Tell me that after all it’s only a game.
Tell me there are more serious problems:
The war in Iraq, the ozone hole.
Tell me that life goes on.
Tell me that tomorrow is another day.
Tell me that you can’t win ‘em all.
Tell me it’s taking part that counts.
Remind me that I myself foresaw it.
Assure me that next time things will go better.
Tell me that what we call the end is often the beginning.
Tell me you know how I feel.
Tell me you’ve been through it too.
Give me a hug, clasp me tight.
Take me to the cinema or theatre.
Make me forget.
Console me.

Notes

For this third poetic response to England’s World Cup exit, I drew inspiration from a poem by Primo Levi entitled Dateci (Give us).
