Destiny

Attracting much jeering,
The kids with soft necks,
Fearfully peering
Through tortoiseshell specs.
Hostility building
Encumbered by strife,
Envy now gilding
The lily of life.
Whatever became
Of the picked-upon kid,
Achieving a name
For the running he did?
Emotions now numb,
With a myopic glee
He grew to become
A top ten referee.
