Dortmund 2001

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 So many false promises and fading dawns
Of titles gone begging and hopes left forlorn
Gone were the days when we spoke of the nights
Champions of Europe, Bob Paisley our guide
Seventeen years since the reds were in Europe
Seventeen years since we danced and we cheered
Those old Euro nights of each golden victory
Oh so long so long those seventeen years

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 We travelled to Dortmund new songs on our lips
The long wait almost over the celebrations begin
Two trophies already, the treble’s on course
First Roma them Barca slain on Houllier’s swords
A little known team by Alaves known
Found their way to the UEFA final, the seeds are all sewn
Everyone said we’d be boring, no goals
But if nine’s not enough what is heaven knows!

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 Babbel found the net and made it 1 to the reds
Tallez threatened but we went 2 up thanks to Steg
Alonso came on and he converted their goal
But Gary Mac took our pen and he slotted it home
3-1 to the redmen and the kop is in full song
Gerry’s smile begins to widen but the night is still long
Moreno bags for Alaves and now the score is 3-2
Moreno still a thorn bags another and the impossible is true

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 We gaze up to heavens in need of the divine
And Gerry by the bench must ‘ve read our minds
Don’t give us Moses or St Peter but the best that we’ve got
So we call on Robbie Fowler, AKA God!
Our prayers are soon answered, it’s not over yet
God beats two defenders, drills the ball into the net
4-3 to the redmen, now the cup’s coming home
As the angels up in heaven sing “You’ll never walk alone”

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 The Spanish side are fighters and don’t give up the ghost
Raining shots down like bullets and the pressure soon told
It was only a matter of time before they would score
And two minutes from time ex-manc Jordi Cryuff made it 4-4
Our nails in our pockets fingers bitten to the bone
Extra time now it’s pressure with golden goal
Smicer’s fouled by Karmona and they’re down to just nine
And when mac’s free kick deflects off Geli the score is Liverpool 5!

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 The Liverpool flags and songs they fill up the sky
Our faces wet with tears Dortmund bars all drunk dry
We were singin’ and dancin’ our hearts set on fire
“Just like Rome” one kopite yelled with joy in his eyes
What a glorious summer of celebration and song
Of broken hearts mended, the righting of wrongs
Sure earth has fine diamonds with a heavenly light
But none shine like Liverpool on a great European night

7 Leave a comment on verse 7 0 So the treble was won with a flurry of goals
With boots laced with lightning, commitment and soul
And the pages of history will honour each name
And the kop choir has new songs to sing at each game
For the redmen were magic each man can walk tall
And the smile on their face the biggest of all
For our scarves and our banners tell of each victory
“Our destiny is written in our history”

8 Leave a comment on verse 8 0 The Kop choir was singin “Alaves Alaves”
For their part in the final was one of true grace
So 50 Greatest Euro moments? We’ve a hundred and more
UEFA’S and Super-Cups, oh yeah and Euro Cups FOUR
So you can keep your Brazilians and Mancs on the make
You can keep all your lists of what you all think is great
The legends of Anfield our great European nights
Will make it onto God’s list, when He draws up his sides.

Notes

Fingers crossed for Tuesday night….

“I was born by the banks of the Mersey
Facin the Irish Sea
It might not look like heaven to you
But its home sweet home to me”
