the game
that bore us Bective

or Harlequins – as better known
to pure London folk

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 For long it is
since I have departed
the Big Smoke

7 Leave a comment on verse 7 0 And I write not
of the hurly burly
attributed to Hurling

8 Leave a comment on verse 8 0 Nor of the impassioned play
of the gallant Gaelic
now unfurling

9 Leave a comment on verse 9 0 No, for well acquainted
with my own desires –
I relate … everything

10 Leave a comment on verse 10 0 Stories read, news imbued
journeys jeeped, quotes misconstrued
to the joy, that only the Beautiful Game, can bring

Notes

First couplet – is derived from a line in the Bob Dylan song : Bye and Bye – or so I read –
All it did was trigger doggerel about my love of a game that – to my knowledge – Dylan has never acknowledged.

Triggered by an article in the Sunday Times Culture magazine, under book review.

Bective Rangers : a Rugby club in Dublin – better known for it’s ‘deeshco’
