Early Goal.

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 Huddled around the wireless
Crackling in the voice
Minutes until the final whistle
And all Tyneside would rejoice.
It’s May the Third 1952
And I am still a boy
George Robledo scores the winner
To fill my young geordie heart with joy.
And our silent colliery village
Would burst into life quite soon
And they’ll be dancing on the green
Like a scene from ‘Brigadoon’.
We all sang ‘The Blaydon Races’
Outside on the cobbled lanes
Newcastle One the Arsenal nil
And we had won the cup again.

Notes

I remember well listening to our old wireless when George Robledo scored the only goal of the 1952 F.A.cup final against Arsenal. It had been 61 years since a team had retained the cup. And if any one goal set me out on the path of a lifetime support of Newcastle Utd this was to be the one.
