it’s a greasy pole
that separates the teams;
the second hands
sent forth, by the clock of fate
try to clamber
to the zenith
by the nervous boots
of the ungodly

Group A results :
Russia 2 Greece 1
Portugal 1 Spain 0
The first of the the last round of group matches;
where teams can be through or out, at various stages of the game,
depending on the current scores in the two group matches.
For a long while, it was Spain and Greece in the Quarter-Finals, until Nuno Gomes scored for Portugal.
Portugal top the group; Greece 2nd, Spain 3rd, Russia 4th
ungodly : with the Olympics in Athens coming up this summer, the ancient Greek Gods played at the back of my mind

I really like this poem. So many great phrases: “striped and manicured”, “a crowd of heads go drooping”, “and maintain home advantage”, “when Mum blew for dinner”. Much appreciated! Thank you.

Such great words Ray. So evocative of that time of innocence Kepp on mate. More please. It will be under the Nostaglia section too.

As a child I drew crowds; row upon row,
fifteen thousand little circles for the fans,
such a great line…bewcause we all did…and golaposts nets and floodlights too…
