also hoped it would be in praise of the ladies
from the land of St George

for gallant losers (so undoubtedly English), but praise too
to the dames of Deutschland, Danmark, Svensk & Norge

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 I thought I’d be tipping breathlessly on the qwertyboard
about how much I enjoyed round 3
of Euro 2005

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 Of how I’d taken pleasure from all the tricks and flair
of all the flicks, of ball, not hair
of how I’d seen an even more beautiful game come alive

I couldn’t, because I didn’t
see the game, that is
too busy, family matters (it does)
But that’s no sleight
for I’ve enjoyed what I’ve seen so far
and I’ll watch again
more so, if it’s on tv
for you see
I do miss some games, though it hurts
(thank god for the VCR, band-aid for the brain)
I’ve missed Champions League, Premiership,
Carling Cup, FA Cup, World Cup qualifiers
and I might miss some of the forthcoming Confederations Cup
but to be honest
I’ve missed far less than I catch –
my day’s not replete, unless there’s a match;
so welcome, the Women’s game, into my world
