Euro 2012 XII : Sonnet : GLT again!

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 We watched the match anxiously from afar
The Ukraine a long stretch for the pocket
Occupying hearthside or comfy bar
The fêted winner hardly a rocket;
Wayne Rooney stoops to score from two yards
And we all feel overwhelming relief
From bar room connoisseurs to the bards
There’s excitement and mounting belief;
But we ride our luck and survive a scare
JT chases and hooks the ball away
The extra official’s standing right there
But shows no equaliser to defray;
The spectre of goal line technology –
We’re due a break, we owe no apology!

Notes

Euro 2012, day 12, Tuesday 19th June 2012

Group D

France 0 – 2 Sweden

Ukraine 0 – 1 England (Rooney)

Sweden’s surprise win means England top the group, and avoid Spain in the Quarter-Finals.

JT clears off the line, but slo-mo reveals that the ball was fractionally over.

Does that even up Frank Lampard’s (not given) goal against Germany in the World Cup in South Africa?

For me, no, because Ukraine’s (not given) goal stemmed from an offside that wasn’t given.

Calls for GLT now intensify, as the extra official, who was just 5 or 6 yards from the post, didn’t signal a goal.

Group D finishes:
England
Spain
Ukraine
Sweden

So both hosts bow out of the tournament at the group stage.

The Q-F line-up:

Portugal v Czech Republic
Germany v Greece
Spain v France
England v Italy

(my predicted winners listed first!)
