Euro 2012 XV : QF2 – QF4

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 QF2

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 there was no paucity of goals
in what was billed as the “Bailout Game”
no austerity when it came to thrills
but no handouts either (other than for sporting handshakes)
when the final whistle came

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 QF3 haiku

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 double deluxe
one hundredth cap and scoring
Alonso alights

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 QF4: oh no, not again …..

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 a preponderance of poets
poised….
to promulgate with praise per pukka penalty –
to fête
and fawn over the fearless….
but it’s Pirlo
who’s peerless

7 Leave a comment on verse 7 0 QF4: repeated ad nauseum …..

8 Leave a comment on verse 8 0 never have two words been so inextricably linked….
“peerless Pirlo” –
they’re everywhere
every headline
every byeline
every quip
joined at the hip
and clichéd to death

9 Leave a comment on verse 9 0 but there is another alliterative pairing
that deserves an airing:
“Pirlo purloined”….
aye, for we can argue that
but for him
we might
just might
ourselves
have managed to snatch victory
from the jaws of (a well deserved) defeat?

Notes

Euro 2012 Quarter Finals

Friday, 22nd June 2012, QF2

Germany 4 – 2 Greece

Saturday, 23rd June 2012, QF2

Spain 2 – 0 France (Xabi Alonso scores with a header and a penalty)

Sunday, 24th June 2012, QF2

England 0 – 0 Italy, a.e.t

Italy win on penalties.
Italy deserved winners….
But….
England should have had two penalties for shirt pulling in the box, from Stevie G free kicks….
Knowing our luck, we’d probably have missed them too!

Stevie G and Wayne Rooney scored their penalties.
Then Ashley Young and Ashley Cole missed theirs. Italy only missed one out of 5.

It’s a small world – and getting smaller.
I was on the 9:15 Gatwick Express into London on Monday morning, along with a young couple just back (overnight) from the match in Kiev!!! All set to be at their desks by 10am.
