Euro16 Wall Chart Blues

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 the George Cross flags are all now strangely absent
I sense nor see no wild hysteria here
the local pubs are closing down and struggling
It’s getting hard to to see games anywhere
but I’ve got all I need at home beside me
here for free before they kick a ball
talkin’ bout my Euro 16 Wall Chart
all spanking new and shiny on my wall

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 and If I had a spare one I’d go crazy
but way out here those Wall Charts are like gold
they’re bigger than your new Panini stickers
and really rare or so I have been told..
and Glastonb’ry can take a hike this Summer
they never show the games there any more
I’ll stay and scream in vain here for my country
just like I’ve done a million times before..

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 and as a child in ’58 I had one
when gran’ma let me stay up late at night
watching Pelé on our first TV set
gliding past them all in black and white
and ev’ry golden tournament there’d be one
as glossy as the Brylcreem on my hair
a Free Exclusive Wall Chart with some paper
bringing such excitement ev’rywhere
and we’d record the scores in pen or felt tip
and fill them in as ev’ry round would end
on our brand new World or Euro Wall Charts
there beside us like some lifelong friend
and we’d re-live those stunning long-gone matches
we’d become some new emerging star
in between the pavements and the moonlight
stopping only for some passing car

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 but all those days are gone and they are over
and how our country’s expectations drop
and over are the dreams that we once harboured
when we were sure the ‘run’ would never stop
but still we feel those old emotions rising
for England Ireland Wales ..the memories
when we would act it out in parks and playground
with goalposts built from lamp-posts, coats and trees

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 and tarnished by the years of disappointment
you wonder just how much your faith will cope
but once again we summon up the feeling
to still believe and resurrect the hope
and for a month we’ll live with Euro fever
whether we all vote to stay.. or leave
and win or lose it doesn’t really matter
there’s just one thing that makes me still believe
I’m talkin’ bout my Euro 16 Wall Chart
I’m staring at it BLANK upon my wall
and with my pen my country’s in the Final
long before we even kick a ball

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 and even though the George Cross flags are absent
and terrorism hangs in clouds of fear
as refugees risk ev’rything for freedom
we pray out loud solutions will draw near
and we will watch and listen just like always
and when ‘we’ play I know I’ll kick each ball
and after on My Euro 16 Wall Chart
I’ll keep my records here upon my wall

Notes

Bring it on!
