from Gary Sprake 🙂

Notes

for all Leeds fans everywhere, but especially for Vincent

for those of a younger generation, Gary Sprake’s slip up in that FA Cup Final, is probably the most notorious goalkeeping spillage in football

that FA Cup Final was the first ever not to be decided on the day, as it went to a replay, Chelsea winning 2-1 after extra-time at Old Trafford.
Both games were the first games I ever watched in colour (I had to go to friends’ houses – we still only had b&w) – but that was rectified within a month – we had one in place for the 1970 Mexico World Cup – my first as a fan – and the best ever in my opinion.

That FA Cup Final was earlier than usual, to give the players time to rest before going off to defend the Jules Rimet trophy.

updated December 2010 …..

maybe the standout spilling mistake for the younger generation is now Robert Green’s infamous spill in the first game of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa this summer, when he let a lightweight shot from USA’s Clint Dempsey squirm under his body!
