I played for a team in
Division One
I was quite good
and I was happy

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 Then,
I had to leave my country
and my team
so
I came to England

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 It was different
No home, no language, no football
Then
Someone asked me
“Do you like football?”

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 I smiled
“Of course”
and soon
I was playing in a team
for “Hempstead Fieldings”

could not speak
I
could not understand
but, who cares?
I could play football

Notes

Dragan is a Y9 pupil at St. Peter’s High School. He came to England with his family not very long ago – he didn’t speak any English when he first arrived here – and this poem is about being able to play his favourite game in a team again, after leaving everything behind in Croatia.
