2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 siitting on a train as the fields race past
chatting with the Wolves fans talking ’bout the past
giant blue sky over bright green grass
subbuteo floodlights through the trees

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 just like the old days houses all around
old wooden fence looks a little broken down
standing on the terrace at a great little ground
talking to the bloke next to me

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 kids down the front all laughing with their friends
waving to away fans up the other end
you won’t see many grounds like this again
this is real football to me

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 propping up the league at the bottom of the pile
fans boast team strips in all the latest style
things look bleak but they all wear a smile
this is how football ought to be

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 never felt safer in my life before
haven’t stood up since 1984
if this is what it’s like give me more more more
’cause this is what football means to me

Notes

Colchester United 0 Wolves 1. Sat March 2 2008
A ten hour round trip from Stroud on six trains, two tube journeys and two coaches ..(engineering works between Swindon and Reading ) to do 15 minutes of poems and stories. Left the house at 7am got home 10pm. That’s an average day for most travelling away fans..Thanks to Jeanette from Colchester United Study Centre and the great family from Wales who I stood with on their regular “spot” , leaning against their old blue crash barrier.. and also the ever-cheerful West Ham father and son stood behind – who kept me up-dated as all the goals went in on the ‘tranny.’
